Refacing is about keeping the good bones and renewing everything you see and touch. On a kitchen that means new doors and drawer fronts, new end panels and kickboards to match, new handles or a handleless routed profile, and fresh soft-close hinges and runners, while your existing cabinet boxes, benchtop (if you are keeping it) and layout stay put. We can also add a few new elements at the same time, a bank of pot drawers where there were cupboards, a pull-out bin, or a new overhead, so it is part reface, part upgrade. New fronts built for salt and humidity

Coastal air is exactly why so many doors need replacing here. With around 1,333mm of rain a year and summer humidity near 62%, plus salt spray on homes close to the water, original doors, especially cheaper vinyl-wrapped ones, swell at the edges, lift at the corners and dull off over time (source: Bureau of Meteorology, Gosford AWS). When we make replacements we match the material to the room. For wet and humid areas we build door and drawer fronts on a 16-18mm high-moisture-resistant HMR substrate and heat-seal the edges so damp cannot get into the core. Two-pac polyurethane gives a hard, sprayed, UV-stable top-coat that resists the fading and yellowing older doors suffer, high-pressure laminate is tough and colour-fast, and timber veneer suits a coastal or Hamptons look. We are cautious about vinyl-wrap near ovens and steam because the film is the first thing to lift with heat, which is often what failed on the doors we are replacing. The new fronts hang on Blum or Hettich soft-close hinges rated well beyond 100,000 open-close cycles and adjustable three ways, and drawers get full-extension runners from around 40kg up. On homes a few streets back from the beach at Terrigal or Ettalong, we fit corrosion-resistant hinges and runners so the new hardware does not seize the way the old lot did. We are honest that moisture-resistant board is not waterproof, so sealing and detailing still matter.

Plenty of jobs here are doors only. The carcasses are sound, the layout works, the benchtop has years left, and what dates the room is the fronts. Replacing kitchen cabinet doors only means exactly that: new doors and drawer fronts, new hinges and runners, handles if you want them changed, and nothing else touched. No demolition, no benchtop removal, no plumbing or electrical, and the kitchen stays usable while it happens. Every door is made to measure rather than bought in a stock size, which matters more than most people expect. The original beach-cottage and post-war kitchens around Woy Woy, Umina and East Gosford were built to whatever suited the room at the time, so a 597mm opening or a 415mm drawer front is common and a standard door simply will not fit it. We measure every opening individually, make the fronts to those numbers, and set the reveals to within about 2mm across the run. The same doors-only approach works beyond the kitchen. Wardrobe doors, laundry cupboard fronts and bathroom vanity doors are all replaceable without touching the cabinets behind them. On supply: we make and hang the doors as one job rather than selling fronts over a counter for you to fit. Hanging is where a doors-only job is won or lost, because a door that is 2mm out reads as wrong even when the door itself is perfect, and the hinge adjustment on an older carcass is rarely straightforward. What we will not do is reface over a problem. If a carcass is water-damaged, swollen at the base or pulling away from the wall, new doors on it are money wasted, and we say so at the measure rather than after.

What refacing costs versus a new kitchen

The appeal of refacing is the price gap, so here are indicative ranges (not a fixed quote). Replacing the doors, drawer fronts and handles on a typical kitchen, with new soft-close hinges and runners, commonly runs from around $4,000 to $10,000 depending on the number of doors, the finish and whether you keep the benchtop. Two-pac polyurethane fronts sit at the top of that band, melamine and laminate at the lower end. Add new end panels, kickboards and a couple of upgraded drawer banks and you might land $8,000 to $14,000. By comparison, a full custom kitchen replacement generally starts around $16,000 and climbs well past $30,000 with an island and stone, so refacing often lands at a third to a half of a rebuild when the carcasses are sound. Wardrobe and vanity door replacements are smaller again, frequently $1,500 to $5,000 depending on scope. Where to buy replacement doors, or have them made to measure

There are three ways to get replacement kitchen cupboard doors and they are not equivalent. You can buy stock doors off the shelf, order doors only from an online supplier, or have them made to your openings and hung for you. Stock doors are the cheapest and the most likely to disappoint, because they come in fixed increments and older cabinets rarely sit on them. A trip to Bunnings for Kaboodle sizes or the roughly 90km run down the M1 to IKEA at Tempe gets you a door that is close, and close is what makes a refaced kitchen look refaced. Ordering doors only online solves the size problem if you measure perfectly, and it leaves you the harder half of the job. The doors still have to be drilled for the hinge pattern your carcasses use, hung, and then adjusted across three axes until the gaps run true. An older cabinet that has moved makes that fiddly, and a door hung 2mm out reads as wrong even when the door itself is perfect. Having them made and fitted is one job with one point of responsibility. You choose the material, the colour, the handle and the hinge, get corrosion-resistant hardware where the sea air needs it, and the doors are measured, made and hung by the same joiner.
