Storage solutions on the Central Coast come down to using volume the house already has. Every home here holds dead space, under a staircase, behind a hallway wall, above a laundry door, and built-in joinery is what turns it into somewhere things actually live. Two rooms carry most of that work. A linen press is the one people underestimate: shelves at fixed 300mm spacings waste most of a tall cupboard, because folded towels need about 220mm and a doona needs 400mm, so the shelving is set adjustable and spaced to what you own rather than to a standard. The bottom is better as a pair of deep drawers than as a floor you stack onto, and a shallow shelf inside the door takes the spare linen spray and the folded spares. Beside it a broom cupboard, full height and only 300mm to 400mm wide, takes the vacuum, the mop and the ironing board that otherwise lean in a corner of the laundry. Understairs storage is the bigger win and the more awkward build. A stair void is a wedge, so it is planned in three zones: deep pull-out drawers at the tall end for shoes, sports gear and boxes, a hinged or bi-fold door onto hanging or shelving in the middle where the headroom still works, and at the shallow end low pull-outs on castors rather than a cupboard nobody can reach into. Getting a stair void right usually recovers a square metre and a half of usable storage from what was a cavity. Built for coastal damp and salt air

Gosford records around 1,333mm of rain a year, with relative humidity peaking near 62% through the February wet, so a wardrobe or garage cupboard here has to cope with damp air that a dry inland home never sees (source: Bureau of Meteorology, Gosford AWS station 061425). That is why we build the carcasses of any storage unit in a laundry, garage or poorly ventilated room from 16-18mm high-moisture-resistant (HMR) board and heat-seal the edges so humidity cannot creep into the core and swell it. Two very different storage problems turn up on the Central Coast, and they need opposite answers. The region is older than most of New South Wales: at the 2021 Census its median age was 43 and 22.2% of residents were aged 65 and over, against 15.2% across Greater Sydney (source: ABS 2021 Census, Central Coast). Downsizers arriving from larger family homes are not short of storage so much as short of reachable storage, so the fit-out favours deep drawers over low floor cupboards you kneel at, pull-out pantry units that come to you instead of a step stool, and hanging and shelf heights set to the person rather than a standard. A small bedroom is its own problem, and it is rarely solved by more furniture. In a child's or teenager's room the same wall does double duty with a desk return built into the run, so the bedroom does not need a separate study corner. There the answer is vertical, floor to ceiling, with the top 400mm given over to things used twice a year and the eye-level band kept for daily items. Custom storage versus IKEA and flatpack

Flatpack has its place, but it is built to fixed module sizes, and most Central Coast homes are not. The older fibro and weatherboard cottages around Woy Woy, Umina Beach and Long Jetty were thrown up as holiday shacks decades ago and have settled out of square, so a wall of standard 450mm and 600mm cabinets leaves ugly filler strips and dead corners. A Central Coast garage is rarely just for the car. It absorbs the bikes, the surfboards, the tools, the camping gear and the boxes nobody has opened since the move, and most of it ends up stacked on the slab because there is nowhere else for it to go. Garage storage cabinets fix that by taking the volume up the wall instead of across the floor.

The usual build is a floor-to-ceiling run along one wall: closed base cabinets on a plinth clear of the concrete, a bench at working height, and overhead cupboards above it. Keeping the carcase off the slab matters here, because a garage floor sweats in the February humidity and a base sitting directly on concrete wicks it up. Open shelving is cheaper per metre than doors, so a common compromise is closed cupboards at eye level where the room needs to look tidy and open shelving up high where it does not.

A workbench changes what the space is for. Kitchen and cupboard storage solutions: pantries, pull-outs and fit-outs

Most kitchens on the Coast do not need more cupboards so much as better ones. The volume is usually there already, sitting behind a door as a deep dark shelf where things go to be forgotten.
