Walk-in wardrobes come in as many shapes as the rooms that hold them, and we design each to the space you have rather than to a catalogue module. The most common on the Coast is an L-shaped or U-shaped fit-out that wraps two or three walls of a dedicated robe room off the master bedroom, giving long runs of hanging with a wall of drawers and shelves. In newer homes we often build a walk-through robe that runs between the bedroom and the ensuite, so the same floor area works twice. Where the room is generous we add a dresser island in the centre, with drawers below for jewellery and folded items and a surface to get ready on. Where a space is too shallow to stand inside comfortably, a built-in wardrobe is the better answer, and you will hear that from us at the measure rather than after the deposit. The planning is done in real dimensions rather than by eye: we allow around 600mm of depth for any hanging section so shoulders sit square on the rail instead of pressing into the back, about 1,000mm of height for each tier of a double-hang run, and 1,600 to 1,800mm of clear height for long-hang where coats and full-length dresses go. Shelving for folded clothes and bags sits between 350 and 450mm deep, and where an island goes in we hold about 900mm of walking space on every side so drawers open fully with someone standing at them. The interior is then laid out around what you actually own: double-hang for shirts and folded trousers, full-length hanging for coats and dresses, adjustable shelving for bags and hats, angled and lit shoe racks, felt-lined drawers with dividers, and pull-out valet rails. We build in full-length mirrors and LED strip lighting along shelves and hanging rails so you can see what you are choosing at 6am, and any island or bench top is a compliant surface only. Ventilated, square and built for salt and humidity

A walk-in robe is an enclosed room full of fabric, so airflow matters as much as joinery. Relative humidity on the Coast peaks near 63 per cent in late summer on Bureau of Meteorology records, and damp, closed-up air in a room full of fabric is how clothes turn musty, so we ventilate the fit-out with gaps behind and above the carcasses and design airflow in where a robe has no window rather than sealing it tight. The cabinetry is built from 16-18mm HMR moisture-resistant board with heat-sealed edge-banding on every edge, which handles that damp air far better than raw particleboard, with boxes glued and dowelled square in the workshop, then scribed to the wall and packed level on site with reveals held to within about 2mm. We are upfront that moisture-resistant is not waterproof; it buys years against humidity, not a flood. Drawers do the heavy lifting in a dressing room, so they run on full-extension runners rated around 40kg and open completely under a full load of folded clothes without flex, while doors and pull-outs use soft-close hardware rated past 100,000 cycles with three-way adjustment. The house itself sets the method. The slab-on-ground builds on the Warnervale and Hamlyn Terrace growth corridor have large, square master suites that take a full modular fit-out cleanly. A 1980s brick-veneer home off Ilya Avenue at Erina, or a post-war brick house along Henry Parry Drive in East Gosford, more often means converting a small adjoining bedroom, where walls have shifted over decades and every carcass has to be scribed and packed to a room that is no longer true. But a true dressing room is where custom pulls clearly ahead. Flat-pack modules come in fixed widths and heights, so they rarely fill a room wall to wall or floor to ceiling, leaving gaps at the ends and a dead strip above that a scribed, built-in fit-out avoids entirely. Plenty of people searching for built-in wardrobes end up choosing between a robe they reach into from the bedroom and a room they walk into, and the deciding factor is floor area rather than taste. Walk in robe ideas, from a simple conversion to a staged budget fit-out

Most walk-in robes on the Coast start as an idea borrowed from somewhere else, so it helps to know which ones actually work in a Central Coast bedroom and which ones only photograph well. The single most useful idea is also the least glamorous: convert the smallest bedroom. A 2.4 by 2.4 metre third bedroom in an East Gosford or Woy Woy home is almost exactly the footprint of a generous dressing room, and taking the door off the hallway and opening it into the master is usually a one-day carpentry job rather than a structural one.

For a simple walk in robe, keep it open. Leaving the entry doorless, or hanging a curtain on a ceiling track, removes the cost of doors and the swing space they need, and it makes a narrow robe feel twice the size.
