The Central Coast's housing stock runs from 1950s fibro and weatherboard cottages around Woy Woy, Umina Beach and The Entrance, through post-war brick in Gosford and East Gosford, to brand-new slab-on-ground homes on the Warnervale and Wadalba growth corridor, and each one wants a different kitchen. Gosford itself was named in 1839 after the Earl of Gosford and became a town in 1885, and many of its older cottages still have the narrow, closed-off kitchens of that era. In those we build galley and L-shaped layouts that claw back bench and storage without crowding the room, often opening a wall into a slimline breakfast bar. How a Central Coast kitchen is built, sealed and installed

Every kitchen we make starts as flat sheets of 16-18mm board cut on our workshop saw, and in wet zones under the sink and around the dishwasher we use HMR moisture-resistant board rather than standard particleboard. Gosford averages close to 959mm of rain a year and February is its wettest month, and a coastal kitchen lives with that humidity plus the steam of daily cooking, so we heat-seal the edge-banding on all four sides of each panel and seal the sink and tap cut-outs to stop moisture creeping into the core. Carcasses are glued and dowelled and built dead square, then scribed and packed level on site so door reveals sit within about 2mm across the run. The moving parts are where a kitchen is won or lost, so we fit Blum or Hettich soft-close hinges rated well past 100,000 open-close cycles and adjustable three ways, and full-extension runners carrying around 40kg, stepping up to 70kg on heavy pot-and-pan drawers. For homes a few streets back from Terrigal or The Entrance, where salt-laden sea air is relentless on metal, we specify corrosion-resistant hinges, runners and fixings so the hardware does not pit or seize. Benchtops are your choice of laminate, natural granite or marble fabricated by licensed stonemasons, porcelain or solid timber. Matching wardrobes and storage built with your kitchen

Cabinetry rarely stops at the kitchen. The same board, door finish and soft-close hardware used in a Central Coast kitchen carry through to the wardrobes, linen towers and hallway storage around it, so the whole house reads as one job rather than three separate ones.

The honest case for custom over flat-pack on the Central Coast starts with fit. Flat-pack cabinets come in fixed module widths, and in an older Woy Woy or Umina beach cottage where walls have shifted and nothing is truly square, those rigid boxes leave gaps you fill with filler strips and hope. Cabinets are scribed to the actual wall and the benchtop is set to a level line even where the floor is not, which is what prevents the filler panels and tapered gaps that fixed flat-pack modules leave behind.

Benchtops after the engineered stone ban

Since 1 July 2024 engineered stone benchtops can no longer be manufactured, supplied or installed in Australia. A renovation therefore replaces an engineered stone top with laminate, natural granite or marble cut by licensed stonemasons, porcelain, or solid timber.
